FACT(s) (Environment):

Windows 2000

FACT(s) (Environment):

Progress 9.1C

SYMPTOM(s):

Starting database fails with error 880.

SYSTEM ERROR: Bad counter in the .bi file. (880)

CAUSE:

A prostrct repair had been carried out on a copy of the production database. The new st file for the new database still referred to the bi files of the database that had been copied from.

What prostrct repair does is update the list of files in the .db file to reflect the new locations of database extents. So in this case, when a broker was run for the new database, Progress was looking in the .db file and finding a bi file that was for the database that was copied from. Thus two database were writing to the same bi file. This only became clear when the databases were shut down and they tried to restart.

FIX:

1. Restore a good backup for all databases involved. Ensure that it is from before the time when prostrct repair was used on the copy.
2. Always ensure that the correct st file is being used with prostrct repair.
