ALL BTOS VERSIONS-local bi(lbi) causes disk fragmentation

890113-SLK01ALL BTOS VERSIONS (4.3F and higher): local before-image causes disk
fragmentation. Confirmed by developer as a PROGRESS bug. As the local
before-image file (.lbi) gets very big, it can cause significant
fragmentation of your disk. To determine fragmentation problem,
customers used a non-standard operating system utility called
"fragcheck" which will report broken files fragmented more than 10
times. This can be a problem for users who are all using the same
master disk because there's a limit as to the number of fragments
allowed on a disk. One customer's workaround for now was to move
users to having their own local disks on each cluster. Note that this
workaround only reduces the severity of the problem, it does not take
it away, since the local disk can become fragmented as the user's
local before-image file gets large. We are looking into fixing this
problem (which, by the way, the fix to this can lead to a big
performance boost on BTOS/CTOS machines) in another release (it is not
known at this time what that release will be or whether it will be
held until Version 6 -- will keep you informed as I hear more details.
NOTE: as of today: 12/5/89 - Development has confirmed that this
problem is fixed in 5.2F (which will hopefully be available for
commerical release sometime in January or begining of February, 1990).
