NLM install doc bug 92-07-08-016: READ ME FIRST !!!

920710-elp01
Bug number: 92-07-08-016 Date Reported: 07/08/92 By: elp
Version: 6.2H Date Modified: 07/08/92 Dept: MED
Affected OS: DOS
Machine/Model: NLM CLOSED: 8/10/92 - Amber Swope, Doc.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Installing client software on a PC & NLM environment overwrites the
client PROGRESS.CFG file if you follow the directions in the install
brochure.
- Page 13 has a cautionary note about installing client software first
so it can go into the SYS:\DLC directory, and the install process will
then know to put the server software in SYS:\DLC\LAN. However, this
is only true for DOS servers. An NLM server install MUST reside in
SYS:\DLC due to the nature of Novell's NLM. Customers following the
instructions to load the client first, and then follow the
instructions on page 52 to load the NLM executable ALSO in SYS:\DLC
will find they can't run because they weren't told to make of copy of
the client's PROGRESS.CFG file elsewhere and then copy it back under
another name, e.g., sys:\dlc\client.cfg and point PROCFG at that.
- The installs for the NLM and the CLIENT (DOS, MS-WINDOWS, and OS/2)
should be smart enough to detect the existance of a conflicting
previous installation, and if the client was already installed in
sys:\dlc, then the NLM installation should copy the requisite files
off temporarily and put them back without destroying the installation
of the client files.

NOTE: This requires both a change to the install notes
(DOCUMENTATION) and the installation program (MEDIA).
Workaround:
Install the NLM software first. It must reside in SYS:\DLC.
Install any client software afterwards. USE A TAILORED, NON-DEFAULT
DIRECTORY, something other than SYS:\DLC.
If, after you have successfully installed the client software into
a tailored directory, you wish to recover some disk space, manually
copy the client-unique files back to SYS:\DLC and copy the client's
PROGRESS.CFG to another name, such as SYS:\DLC\CLIENT.CFG.
Then delete the redundant files from the client's tailored directory.
