SOFTWARE NOTES:
o Progress and the PROBUILD Utility
---------------------------------
If you purchased PROGRESS Version 6.2F or higher, you can now use
PROBUILD to build an executable with a remote gateway configurable
element. For example, if you need to access a remote ORACLE data-
base, juse select your networking protocols and REMOTE ORACLE
GATEWAY at the CONFIGURABLE ELEMENTS screen.
If you need to access your non-PROGRESS database locally, you need
purchase the PROGRESS 4GL/RDBMS software and the Database Gateway
software. If you do not have this combination of products, you
cannot load the standard gateway in your executable. See Chapter 1
in the PROGRESS 3GL Interface Guide for more information.
o 500 File Limit
--------------
Unlike earlier versions, Fast Track Version 6.2F enables you to
choose from more than 500 files when creating QBFs, reports, or
forms. Now there is no limit to the number of files you can
select. However, because of internal changes to the Fast Track
code, you must recompile any QBFs or menus generated with earlier
versions of Fast Track to run them under version 6.2F.
o OPEN/4GL
--------
Starting with PROGRESS Version 6.2F, there is a new product called
OPEN/4GL. To install this product, follow the directions in your
Installation Notes as if you were installing 4GL/RDBMS.
o REMOTE GATEWAYS
---------------
In PROGRESS Version 6.2F, you can remotely access an Oracle or RMS
database. To do this, you must install a Version 6.2F (or later)
core PROGRESS product (for example, PADS, 4GL/RDBMS, OPEN 4GL,
Query-Report or Run-Time) on the machine where you are running
your PROGRESS application and on the machine hosting your non-
PROGRESS database.
o Online Backups
--------------
The use of the -o (overlap factor) is not supported in this
release; you must restore the incremental backups exactly the
same way as you did when you backed them up or you will have
problems. For example,
proshut demo -C online /dev/rst8
proshut demo -C online /dev/rst8 incremental -o 2
After restoring the full backup, if you skip any of the incre-
mentals, you receive an error message indicating that the
tapes are out of sequence and the restore fails.
Workaround: Make sure all backups are restored in exact order.
o Using PROREST Utility
---------------------
If your machine crashes in the middle of a restore, and you then
apply an incremental backup to that restore, you get the message
that you have possible file truncation and Progress will dump a
core file.
Workaround: Start PROREST from the beginning.
o Remote RDB Gateway
------------------
Although this building a remote RDB Gateway shows as an option
on the PROBUILD menu, this feature is not available under
version 6.2F of Progress. If you try to build this module, you
will get warning messages and then an error message:
ldpro: FAILED to load _progres.
Workaround: Do not use the Remote RDB Gateway option on the
PROBUILD menu.
