Desktop hanging or "cannot perform malloc" error on SCO
If you have a customer with SCO Open Desktop and they can start
the procedure editor with _promtf -ws but when they load the desktop
it hangs, the issue may well be that they have a VGA driver that only
supports 16 colors rather than 256 colors. The images for the Desktop
need 256 colors.
Another symptom the customer may experience is "Error: cannot
perform malloc" when they access the Data Dictionary from the
Tools menu option.
To work around this problem either set SCO to black and white mode
or upgrade the VGA card or driver to 256 color support.
The customer can check to see if they have a 16 color driver by
entering the following command from the sco unix prompt:
#mkdev graphics
They can then select the view button for the video configuration to see
what driver they have loaded.
