SUMMARY:

When selecting a DSN in either Excel 2000 or MSQuery 2000 on a Citrix MetaFrame XP machine using the Progress 9.1C ODBC driver, the following licensing error might appear:

"[MERANT][ODBC Progress driver]You are not licensed to use this MERANT ODBC Driver under the license you have purchased. If you wish to purchase a license for use with this application, then you may use this driver for a period of 30 days, during which time you are required to obtain a license. You can order a license for a MERANT ODBC Driver for use with this application by calling MERANT at 800-876-3101 in North America and +44 1727 81282 elsewhere. Thank you for your cooperation."

The steps leading up to this message are:

In Excel -- Data > Get External Data > New Database Query.

In MSQuery -- File > New > DSN.

EXPLANATION:

For security reasons, an Administrator may want to restrict user browse access for Network Neighborhood to a user or the group that user is a member of. The users will not be able to see any folders on the LAN or locally on the Citrix server.

The user, or the group it is a member of, therefore may not have browse permissions on the ODBC driver license file, pgodbc.lic, or its parent directory, DLC\bin. According to Data Direct (formerly MERANT), who manufactures the ODBC driver, the user must be able to browse to this directory. Even with read and write permissions, the error will result.

SOLUTION:

Allow browse permissions to DLC\bin for the user or its parent group using Citrix Administration.
