Kbase 21963: Nameserver Won't Start -- Error 8171 with Dell's Open Manage

SUMMARY:

Some Dell computers come preinstalled with Windows NT 4.0 and Dell's Open Manage product. The Dell Open Manage array management tool integrates with the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) and augments the Disk Administrator functionality. If Open Manage is installed, the NameServer might not start in Progress Explorer or at the command line. No error is recorded in the NameServer log and a status check in Progress Explorer gives a blank summary tab.

The 8171 error will be found in the admserv.log

[Adminserver] SvcControlCmd.connectToService() failure:Unable to
connect to the service process at rmi://pchost:20931/NS1(after 2
retries) (8171)

EXPLANATION:

Open Manage installs its own version of Java and it appears to interfere with the Progress required Java.

SOLUTION:

Contact Dell to disable or uninstall the Open Manage Product.
