Kbase 21899: Progress Explorer Does Not View Log Files on XP or Win2000

SUMMARY:

The Progress Explorer doesn't allow you to view Progress log files on Windows XP or on Windows 2000.

EXPLANATION:

The problem is due to Progress using MMC/J++. The logviewer is intentionally disabled with MMC 1.2. When Progress attempted to use the logviewer with MMC 1.2, there were fatal errors within the MMC. As of this writing (March 2002), Progress has been unable to resolve this problem with Microsoft. The Progress Explorer (ProExp) is written in J++, however Microsoft no longer supports the use of J++ with MMC.

SOLUTION:

To address this issue, Progress would need to re-architect the Progress Explorer. This would require rewriting the Progress Explorer in C++ or reworking the User Interface so that it does not display the log viewer as part of MMC. A short-term solution may be to open a separate window to view the log files rather than viewing them directly in the MMC console. This is still being investigated. We expect a solution to this problem to be available in a later release of Progress (possibly 9.1E or 9.2A).
