SUMMARY:

This Solution applies to Progress Version 9.

When trying to start your database via the Progress Explorer, you might encounter these error sequences:

-- in the Progress Explorer:

Error in database startup. (JUNMsg030)

Error in startup of database localhost:20931:c^e^s^. Message:
file c:\91c\properties\conmgr.properties, error Specified Service
does not exist
15:24:55 SERVER: Error reading server group
c^e^s^.defaultconfiguration.defaultservergroup out of (JUNMsg024)

note: c^ = c with caron (and same with e, s)

and the database does not start. Or,

-- in the .lg file:

15:06:52 BROKER 0: Registration ACK not received, msgcode=11. (9148)
15:06:52 BROKER 0: Admin Server rejected registration. (8844)
15:06:52 BROKER 0: Unrecoverable error in connection to Admin Server, running unmanaged. (8850)

The database is up and running, but you are not able to shut it down via the Progress Explorer. Shutdown has to be done manually via "proshut dname -by".

EXPLANATION:

The errors result from international characters being used for database object names in the Progress Explorer; that is, characters with accents and/or carons.

The first error occurs when you are using carons in a database object name, the second when you are using accents.

This behavior is currently a limitation of the Progress Explorer and it has been logged as bug number 20020103-016.

SOLUTION:

Use pure (no accents, no carons) English names for database objects defined in the Progress Explorer.
