Kbase 21856: Wrong V8.3 DB Utilities Shipped with Version 9.1C for Linux

SUMMARY:

This problem scenario applies only to Progress Version 9.1C for Linux.

You are upgrading from Version 8.3x to Version 9.1C. You remove V8.3 from your machine and now install V9.1C. Migrating the V8.3x database to V9.1C requires the bi file to be truncated first. If this wasn't done before the V8.3x installation was removed, you must use the V8.3 Database utilities installed with V9. You try to truncate the bi file using the V8.3 utilities under DLC/bin and the truncate fails with:

"cannot execute binary file"

EXPLANATION:

The problem is that the wrong 83dbutils files were shipped with V9.1C for Linux. This has been fixed in V9.1D.

SOLUTION:

You can find the correct files for V9.1C on the Progress FTP site.
Directions:

FTP to: ftp.progress.com
Login in username - anonymous password - <your email address>
cd patches/LINUX
get 83dbutils.tar.Z

The 83dbutils.tar.Z, contains:

promsgs
83version
83_dbutil
83_proutil

Unpack this file and replace the current files in DLC/bin/83_dbutils with these new files. You will now be able to use the V8.3 utilities.
