Status: Unverified
FACT(s) (Environment):
HP-UX
HP-UX 11 32-bit
HP-UX 11 64-bit
SYMPTOM(s):
Poor performance
CAUSE:
HP-UX 10.0 and later versions have a kernel feature named pseudo-swap. This has been linked as a possible cause for time response degradation problems when enabled. It should be considered in performance related problems.
Pseudo-swap is activated by setting the kernel parameter swapmem_on to 1. When enabled the maximum value of swappable space becomes:
physical swap plus 3/4 of available RAM.
This means that pseudo-swap adds memory to extend the physical swap space.
In some cases the memory taken by the pseudo-swap feature has been seen to cause a serious degradation on the time response of Progress applications.
FIX:
Disable the pseudo-swap by setting the swapmem_on to 0.
