FACT(s) (Environment):
Actuate 4.x
SYMPTOM(s):
Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 1
Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1
Saving an Actuate report instance (executed through Report Cast and showed as DHTML in a browser) as PDF from Internet Explorer 5.x the dialog box prompts to save the file with the incorrect extension (.HTM).
This applies also to csv and txt when saving the search results as a comma or tab separated list (that is, to be used in Excel).
CAUSE:
This is a known defect in previous versions of Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer Saves HTML Content Instead of the Active Document.
FIX:
There are a several solutions to choose from:
Apply an Internet Explorer 5.5 SP1 hotfix from Microsoft
The Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q281119 describes the symptom, resolution and workaround. A single file (mshtml.dll) provided by Microsoft fixes this problem.
Install Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2
The same Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q281119 describes another resolution which is to upgrade to the latest Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2. At this writing (October 2001), the latest is Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2. NOTE: Upgrading to Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 has the added advantage of addressing a security leak in Internet Explorer -- Incorrect MIME Header Can Cause Internet Explorer to Execute E-mail Attachments, a behavior described in Microsoft Security Bulletin (MS01-020). SP2 will help combat the W32/Nimda virus (http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99209).

Install Internet Explorer 6. (Latest release as of October 2001.)
Workaround (from the Q281119 KB article)
To work around this problem, choose to Open the document when you receive the Open dialog box. Once the document is open, click Save As on the File menu to save the document to your computer. Note that you can also right-click the download link, and then click Save Target As.
