Frequently Asked Questions FAQs on Banyan Vines and PROGRESS
Below are some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) regarding
PROGRESS and Banyan Vines local area network software.
1. Which protocols does PROGRESS support with Banyan?
PROGRESS only supports Netbios when working on a Vines network.
Banyan has Netbios services that can be started and be used by
PROGRESS. NOTE: Encourage the customer to contact Banyan
and get their latest and greatest patches for the Netbios services.
It will make the customer's life much easier. Banyan has recently
redone their Vines Netbios implementation.
2. Is Netbios the only supported protocol?
Yes. We do not support their native IP.
3. Is there a PROGRESS DOS product supports Banyan Vines 5.53(6)?
If not, which currently available V6 DOS product does support
another Banyan release?
We do not certify or port our product specifically to Vines,
or any other Netbios implementation. We port our product(s) to
the Netbios standard, so as long as Banyan followed the standard,
any version of our products that support Netbios will work.
4. Does there exist a special Banyan Server (like for Novell)?
Not at the present time. Banyan has been in contact with our
Marketing group to create a native Vines DB Server, but to this
date, the plans for this have not solidified.
5. If Netbios is the only protocol, then which db-server is supported:
the DOS _mprosrv or the OS/2 server?
In our most recent investigation, v5.XX of Vines did not
support Netbios services on OS/2, therefore, the DOS server
has been the only solution.
If Vines has since added support for Netbios on OS/2,
then PROGRESS should work without difficulty.
