GOAL:
When should DBMAN be used to start and stop a database instead of PROSERVE/PROSHUT.
FACT(s) (Environment):
Progress 9.x
All Supported Operating Systems
OpenEdge 10.x
FIX:
DBMAN should always be used when the Database in questions is being administered by The Progress AdminServer.
In Progress Version 9.x, AdminServer and Progress Explorer were introduced. AdminServer allows remote management of Progress Databases and brokers. Progress Explorer was designed as a single GUI interface and repository for managing all Progress brokers and services, regardless of platform, through the AdminService.
It is important to note, however, that all functions of the Progress Explorer have corresponding command line equivalents. This includes remotely starting and stopping databases and other Progress brokers.
Users who employ AdminService and Progress Explorer to start, stop, maintain and monitor their Databases can use the dbman command in their scripts to control/manage their Database for jobs like stopping and starting the database for unattended offline backups. It also starts the database with the exact configuration stored in the conmgr.properties file. Using dbman allows the Database to register with the AdminServer so that its status is properly displayed in Progress Explorer.
