PROGRESS and ANSI SQL SQL89 PROGRESS and MicroSoft MS ODBC
DRAFT COPY - Currently under review and edit.
INTRODUCTION:
=============
This Knowledgebase entry describes the level of ANSI SQL89
compliance for which PROGRESS Version 7 has been certified.
It also describes the purpose and nature of the MicroSoft ODBC
certification.
WHY YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS:
===========================
In order to ensure compatibility with legacy applications, and
to meet qualification criteria for some applications implementation
decisions, you may need to have documented which certification
compatibility that PROGRESS has passed.
PROCEDURAL APPROACH:
====================
PROGRESS and ANSI SQL -- PROGRESS and MicroSoft ODBC
SQL compatibility is a sticky issue; there are a number of versions of
the SQL standard and there are a number of specifications. For the
standard, there is ANSI SQL 1989, Levels 1 and 2. Then there's the
newer ISO SQL 1992 standard with Entry, Intermediate and Full levels
(Entry Level is ANSI 1989 with Declarative Referential Integrity).
For industry specifications there's X/Open's SQL CAE specification and
an X/Open Call Level Interface (CLI) specification.
Progress Version 7 was certified
as being compliant with level 2 of the ANSI SQL89
specification effective November 1 1993 by NIST
(National Institute for Standards and Technology).
SQL89 (aka X3.135-1989) is a revision of the original
ANSI SQL standard approved in 1986 (SQL86).
Microsoft's ODBC specification is an offshoot of the X/Open and SQL
Access Group work on the CLI. With PROGRESS Version 7, Progress
introduces both the PROGRESS ODBC Driver which enables ODBC compliant
applications (such as MS Access or MS Word) to access PROGRESS
databases and the PROGRESS ODBC DataServer which enables the PROGRESS
Development Environment to access datasources for which there are ODBC
Drivers available.
This product will be available later in 1994.
