FACT(s) (Environment):
Windows 98
Windows 2000
SYMPTOM(s):
Error when connecting remotely to a database server.
Unable to find server <name> with protocol TCP in file SERVICES or SERVICES file not found in expected location. (5192)
CHANGE:
Upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows 2000
CAUSE:
Upgrading Windows 98 to Windows 2000 produces two services files.
When upgrading from Microsoft Windows 98 to Windows 2000, Windows OS does not create a Winnt directory. Microsoft puts all the Windows 2000 files in the C:\Windows directory which is the default install directory for Windows 98. Thus there are two services file, one in the original Windows directory and the other is in the default Windows 2000 directory, c:\Winnt\system32\drivers\etc.
FIX:
Modify the services file in the c:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc directory.
