Kbase 21274: What If a Virus Is Detected on a Progress File

SUMMARY:

Occasionally a virus scanner can detect virus infection on Progress files. Aside from a genuine infection there are some other possibilities why this might be happening.

EXPLANATION:

Virus scanners have to keep track of many viruses and use heuristic scanning to detect morphing, stealth, and unknown viruses.
These methods are not 100% failsafe. Based on sometimes very little information the virus scanner has to report if a file contains a virus or not.

SOLUTION:

First look at the situation where the alert is occurring.
If this is a brand new installation of Progress on the machine and during installation or shortly afterwards your virus scanner complains about viruses, it's more likely to be a false alert. Progress CDs are thoroughly scanned for any problems before they are put in production.

Check whether you get a specific virus name. If your antivirus software reports "found an unknown virus" it is also a little less likely to be a real virus infection.

What can you do when you receive a false alert or so-called phantom virus infection?

-- check with the provider of the antiviral software to find out if
there has been an update for the DAT files (the files that contain
the description of the viruses).

-- contact your antivirus software helpline and ask if this is a known
phantom virus alert.

-- send the infected file to the software company for scanning (most
companies have special procedures for this).

-- see if any other antivirus software also detects the virus.

-- contact Progress support, first getting as much detail as possible
on the name of the virus and version of antivirus software and DAT
file you use.

If there is no immediate solution you can turn off the heuristic- or extensive scanning or exclude the Progress files from the scan.
