Kbase 20879: How to Implement Fail-over Configuration for Unified Broker

SUMMARY:

This Knowledge Base solution describes how to implement a fail-over configuration for a Unified Broker like the WebSpeed and AppServer broker.

EXPLANATION:

The Progress load balancing feature is used to implement a fail-over configuration for a Unified Broker. Load balancing is a NameServer option that comes installed with some products (for example, AppServer Load Balancing) and not within other products (such as WebSpeed Transaction Server). On products where there is no load balancing capabilities, installing the license, NameServer Load Balancing, should be done to manage the weight of the brokers.

SOLUTION:

If you use load balancing with the NameServer, you can specify a fail-over weight factor of zero (0) for a Unified Broker instance. This means you only want to accept connection requests when the NameServer finds no other Unified Broker instance available in the pool.

Also, make sure that the brokers are registered on the same Name Server using the same Application Name. You cannot have more than one broker with the same name registered to the same Name Server, but you can set the same Application Name for different brokers and they will be recognised by the Name Server, and used to balance the load. You can do that setting the application name under the Broker tab, AppService Name List in the broker's properties.
