GOAL:
Secure vs Open Server within CorVu
FACT(s) (Environment):
CorVu
FIX:
If you are in a network scenario, Corvu allows you to "pass through" the security from the network. CorVu can also maintain security within the CorVu program itself.
Secure Server:
A secure server is a database connection that is configured in CorVu to "pass through" the securities that are already established by your database. This allows you to use the same valid user name and password for your database server when you log into CorVu.
You should use a secure server if your DBMS has security features implemented and the data in the database is sensitive in nature.
Follow these steps to implement secure server:
1) Declare the CorVu server as a secure server when you set the CorVu server on the database server.
2) Set up the CorVu server definition within the CorVu administrator as a shared server.
3) The first time you log into CorVu, use the default user name of "admin" and the password of "-corvu-".
Make sure that the check mark for "connect to server" is removed.
4) Establish the * user.
Once you have logged in with the default user name and password, select "users" from the menu items, then "modify user base" from the drop down.
5) Select "new user" and enter the name of the user as the asterisk "*".
While the star user is selected, set the securities to the appropriate group or by checking Maintenance (Maintenance is equivalent to supervisor in CorVu). You
must have maintenance security to access the Knowledge Library.
6) Click on "change password" and enter the asterisk (*) on both line one and line two.
7) Select OK and exit out of CorVu.
8) Test your set up by logging back into CorVu with a valid database username and password.
Make sure the "connect to server" box is checked and that the server appearing on the list is highlighted.
If you attempt to log into a server that is defined as a secure server using an invalid user name or password, you generate the message:
"This server is a secure server and you are not logging in as a secure user. Refer to stage 3 of the installation guide for more information".
Make sure your user name and password supplied are valid on the database server.
Open Server:
An open server uses CorVu security only. This means that all valid users must be defined within the CorVu program itself.
Follow these steps to define a valid user:
1) Declare the CorVu server as an open server when you set the CorVu server on the database server.
2) Set up the CorVu server defintion in the CorVu administrator as shared server.
If the database requires a username and password, enter it on the appropriate lines of the server definition.
3) The first time you log into CorVu, use the default user name of "admin" and the password of "-corvu-".
Make sure that the check mark for "connect to server" has been removed.
4) Select "users" from the menu items, then "modify user base" from the drop down.
5) Select "new user", and enter the name of the user(s) you wish to validate.
6) While the new user is selected, set the securities to the appropriate group(s).
Generally, set one user up using the maintenance security. Maintenance is equivalent to supervisor in CorVu. You must have maintenance security to access
the Knowledge Library.
7) Select the new user and click on "change password".
Enter the password for this user on both line 1 and line 2.
8) Select OK and exit out of CorVu.
9) Test your set up by logging back into CorVu with a valid database username and password.
Make sure the "connect to server" box is checked and that the server that appears on the list is highlighted.
