GOAL:
Installation and configuration of the new CorVu "native" server connection called an ABA server.
GOAL:
How to install CorVu - ABA Server?
GOAL:
How to setup CorVu - ABA Server?
FACT(s) (Environment):
CorVu
UNIX
FIX:
Installing the CorVu ABA Server:
You need the Installation Guide, the latest version of the ABA Server and the ABA Administrator update. The latest version of the ABA server can be downloaded from the following URL:
CorVu WebSite
It is a zipped file that you need to FTP to your host. Page 63 of the CorVu Installation Guide outlines the instructions for installing the ABA Server.
You will be instructed to:
- Establish a user on your host called "corvu".
- FTP (binary mode) the ABA server zip file to you host.
- Extract the files from the zip file.
- Run the SETUP program.
(Write down the port number the setup program tells you that the ABA server is installed on.)
- Reload system files that have been updated.
Follow these steps to configure The ABA Server (UNIX):
(You need the Installation Guide and the port number.)
In CorVu Version 4.0 only, there is a Client-side ABA Administrator update that needs to be installed before you configure the ABA Server. The update is on the 4.0 updates page.
1) Start the ABA Administrator.
Refer to the instructions on Page 67 of the Installation Guide in the window titled Select Server Host.
2) Create a host connection (done only once).
The first time you connect you must establish a connection to a host where an ABA server is installed.
a) Click on the New button.
In this example, you are connecting to a Progress database on a UNIX host.
b) Type in the host name.
The name should be the name of the UNIX Server.
c) Use the password for the user corvu or root at the prompt for a password.
At subsequent logins, you must select the host that was set up in Step b above.
There are two hosts in the following example. The one that is used is "tweetie" with Port 7632. The other host (quest) is on a Windows NT server on the network.
3) Create ABA Server Connection.
(Refer to the top of Page 69 of the Installation Guide.)
a) Select Server > New Server from CorVu ABA Server Administrator window.
Use a name that is meaningful. Do not use the host name. For example, if you are connecting to a Progress production database, name your server connection
PROGPROD. Write down the name of the server because it is used later in configuring the client connection.
b) Select the RDBMS that you are creating a server for. Depending on the ABA server that was installed, you might have several choices.
4) Enter the remote server parameters.
You are establishing connections to specific physical databases. The information requested here varies depending on the database that you are connecting to. For this example, use Progress:
a) Click on the New Database Connection button to begin the set up of your connection.
b) Specify a logical name for the name of the new connection.
For example, if you are connecting to an MFG-Pro database, you might use the logical name of cvmfgpro.
You need to use the New Database Connection button for each database that you want to connect to. For example, if you want to connect to cvmfgpro and cvltables, use the New Database Connection button twice.
You now see new tabs that are added to the window Remote Server Parameters ("connect cvmfgpro" and "disconnect cvmfgpro").
c) Enter the required information for each tab.
Select secure or open server for connection Method. (Refer to Page 4 of the Installation Guide for more information.)
5) Initialize.
Use the browse button to locate where the DLC directory is located. on the Host. The OK button becomes highlighted when you select a valid DLC directory.
a) Set the parameter to make queries run as "FOR READ ONLY":
1) Click New.
2) Type READONLY.
3) Click OK.
4) Select READONLY.
Type in the value 1 in the edit box.
5) Click OK.
b) Leave the default startup parameters unless you are very familiar with Progress startup parameters.
c) Login details:
If this is an open server, you must enter the UserID that is used to log into UNIX. Passwords are optional.
d) Connect cvmfgpro:
1) Enter the Progress connection string for the database that you are accessing.
2) Highlight the Progress CONNECT String parameter and enter the correct information.
The Actual CONNECT String Used parameter is filled in automatically. You do not need to enter any information into this field (figure 8).
NOTE: You must connect in client-server mode. This means that you must specify a Host (-H), Network (-N) and Service (-S) parameter in your connection string. (Refer to Pages 72-74 of the Installation guide for more information.)
For example:
-db /db/prog8/mfgpro -H
tweetie -S mfgsrv -N tcp
e) Cleanup and disconnect.
If there are certain site parameters that you use
when you log out of your database, enter them
here, otherwise leave what is there.
6) Log out of the ABA Administrator.
The OK button is enabled when the required information has been filled in.
Follow these steps to create the ABA Server within CorVu Administrator:
1) Start the CorVu Administrator and create a new server.
The server is TCP connected.
2) Enter the a logical name of the server.
a) Select the Windows sockets 1.1 (32 bit) network type.
b) The UNIX server ( or server where the database lives) is the host IP and port you wrote down earlier.
c) The remote server name is the server name you defined in the ABA Administrator.
Be sure to check the ABA Server box to confirm that an ABA server driver is being used.
Log into CorVu and select the new server..
