GOAL:
How to select the Type of Server Installation on NT 4.0
GOAL:
Differnt ways in which a computer based on Windows NT server can run.
FACT(s) (Environment):
Windows NT
FIX:
A Windows NT server can be run in the following ways:
- Primary Domain Controller (PDC).
A computer in each domain, mentioned as PDC, is the machine
responsible for account maintenance. The PDC is defined
during the installation process.
- Backup Domain Controller (BDC).
Backup domain controllers are named during the installation.
The BDC can control the user LOGIN of a domain.
- Stand-alone or member server.
A stand-alone or member server has the same features and
resources of a Windows NT server:
- It can provide up to 256 Remote Access Service (RAS)
connections.
- Fault tolerance.
- Internet Information Server (IIS), etc.
Contrary to the function of PDC and BDC controllers, the
stand-alone or member servers do not duplicate accounts or
control user LOGIN \ for a specific domain. Therefore, they
can offer application, file and print services more
efficiently than a PDC or BDC.
