GOAL:

How to avoid performance degradation due to Anti-Virus Software

FIX:

Sometimes the anti-virus software that is being used can cause a performance degradation due to the Auto-Scan feature on the product.

For example, when a prowin32 session is started and a Progress library file with a size of just 80MB is specified, it can take between 2 and 3 minutes to start.

A normal performance level can be achieved if the anti-virus software is disabled or the .pl excluded from the anti-virus files to check (2 to 3 seconds depending upon system specifications).

Many of the anti-virus software companies allow the user to configure the file types that are scanned or excluded with these features.

A recommendation is that virus checking be enabled without the Auto-Scan or exclude Progress files affected by the enabled Auto-Scan option, and do a full scan of the files periodically to maintain a virus free system.
