FACT(s) (Environment):
Windows 95
SYMPTOM(s):
Attempting to log into a standard Progress empty database from the desktop icon or from the connect statement.
** The character <character> is not permitted in name <name>. (274)
CAUSE:
This error message is displayed if there are several versions of Progress installed on the same machine and something has gone wrong during the installation (for example, the installations have been done by mistake in the same directory, etc).
An example of an occurrance is after receiving some warnings about older DLL files during a Progress installation, but choose to ignore these warnings.
FIX:
Uninstall all Progress installations from the specific machine then reinstall everything correctly.
