GOAL:
Why the Version 7 protermcap file contains more information than its Version 6 counterpart.
FACT(s) (Environment):
UNIX
FIX:
The protermcap file beginning with PROGRESS V7 has information needed to run the installation utility and on-line Help. It also allows TTY PROGRESS to emulate certain behavior seen in the GUI version.
Since PROGRESS V7 and above is intended to support both graphical user interface (GUI) and character-mode interface (also called tty-mode), to allow code portability, it became necessary to provide support for GUI behaviors in character mode. This required the addition of the new terminal-capability information to the protermcap file.
As a general rule, do not make changes or deletions to any protermcap entry without first understanding the impact that these changes will have. Progress Software cannot be held responsible if alterations you make to a protermcap result in performance problems.
