Windows 2000
Windows XP
SYMPTOM(s):
Running 16-bit programs
wowexec.exe fails to end durring windows logoff.
CAUSE:
When Windows NT runs 16-bit programs, it invokes the Wowexec.exe application. If wowexec.exe is still running When you log off or shut down, wowexec.exe might not terminate correctly, which forces you to use Task Manager to stop it.
FIX:
You can automatically shut down uncooperative tasks at log-off or shutdown by editing the following Registry keys:
KEY_USER\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop
HKEY_USER\youruser ID\Control Panel\Desktop
Add the value AutoEndTasks[REG_SZ] to each key and set the value to 1. This closes any task that does not respond to shutdown.
