Kbase 20163: Can a Version 9 Client Connect to a Version 8 AppServer?

Progress 9.x

SYMPTOM(s):

Unknown service <service_name> transport <transport_name>. (5484)

Trying to connect a Progress Version 9.x client to a Version 8.x AppServer

AppServer

CAUSE:

This configuration will not work. This is considered an unsupported configuration by Progress. No attempt has been made to make the Version 9.x client backward compatible to the Version 8.x AppServer.

Progress does have a "one version back" compatibility rule however, which means that a client can talk with the same version or one Progress version back. This statement is true for client to database connections only. The client to AppServer configuration mentioned above does not follow this rule.

FIX:

To connect to a Version 8.x database while you continue to use a Version 9.x client and AppServer is as follows:

Have a Version 9.x client connect to a Version 9.x AppServer which then can connect to a Version 8.x database.
