GOAL:

How to manipulate the Windows NT paging file to enhance performance.

FACT(s) (Environment):

Windows NT 4.0

FIX:

To enhance performance, create a second paging file on a separate physical disk.

The following considerations deal with size and location of the paging file and further options to avoid memory problems. The paging file should be the size of physical memory plus 11 MB:

- Do not have two paging files on the same disk.

- Have paging files for each separate physical disk.

- The minimum page file size is 2 MB.

- Some performance gains may be had by using Disk
Administrator to set a stripe set which extends the
functionality of character-based disk management tools,
however not as much as using separate disks.

- Make sure Defragment disk pagefile option is on.

- Try to compress NTFS volume on the drive to free disk space.
