Where to find tunable kernel parameter files (various unix)

This notebook entry outlines where the files containing the
tunable parameters for the Unix kernel reside, and whether
a utility exists to modify them. This information was
obtained from the operating system reference manuals (usually
the System Administration Guide) for each platform. Since
this may vary from release to release, please use this only
as a guide and consult the reference manuals for further
details. The man pages on each machine will usually contain
helpful information as well.

Platform/Op Sys Utility (or edit) Parameter File Location(s)
--------------- ------------------ --------------------------

AT&T Sys V.3 /etc/conf/* (use /etc/sysdef
to view current settings)

AT&T Sys V.4 /etc/conf/bin/idtune /etc/conf/cf.d/mtune and
/mdevice (master files);
/stune and
/etc/conf/sdevice.d/* (system-
specific files).

DG/UX sysadm /usr/etc/master.d/dgux

DYNIX/ptx /etc/conf/uts/shm, /sem (use
/etc/sysdef to view current)

HP-UX 800 SAM (except 850/855) /etc/conf/gen/s800
then UXGEN

NCR 3000 IDTUNE then IDBUILD /etc/conf/cf.d/mtune or
/stune. change stune only.

NCR Tower /kernel/tower/conf/systems
32/850

SCO Unix V/386 sysadmsh /etc/conf/*

ULTRIX /etc/doconfig VAX: /usr/sys/conf/vax/sysnm
RISC: /usr/sys/conf/mips/sysnm
where sysnm is the system name
defined during installation.
The /generic file also resides
in this directory.

AIX The majority of the operating system parameters are
preset. For information on available tunable
parameters, refer to the AIX system administration
guide or call IBM.

Solaris 2.1-3 /etc/system To view current kernel
parameters: sysdef -i
To make changes, modify
/etc/system.
