GOAL:

Why Some Patches are No Longer Available from the Electronic Software Download center ESD ?

GOAL:

Why Some Service Packs are No Longer Available on the Progress Webpage?

FIX:

When Progress releases a new commercial version, users call Progress technical support asking why certain patches are no longer are available on the Progress web page.

When Progress issues a new main release (for example, Progress 9.x), patches for the old release (Progress 8.x) are still available for download.

When Progress issues a new minor release (for example, Progress 9.1x), patches for the old release (Progress 9.0x) are still available for download for a limited period of time.

When Progress issues a new maintenance release (for example, Progress 9.1E, where the older version was Progress 9.1D), the Service Pack for the older version will no longer be available for download.

This is because Progress Software recommends an upgrade to the new maintenance release. This new maintenance release contains all bug-fixes that were patched in the earlier maintenance release with the major difference that it is tested extensively.
A patch is more of a quick fix to solve problems that occur in the time-period between the old and new maintenance release.

If you have a critical issue with the old maintenance release and you cannot perform an upgrade, contact Progress Technical Support and they might be able to produce a patch.
