GOAL:

How to improve performance on NT after installing SP.

FACT(s) (Environment):

Windows NT 4.0

FIX:

A change was made to the Rdr.sys file in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 to fix an issue with a handle being invalidated when a dismount occurs. This may cause additional network traffic, which may degrade performance.

According to Microsoft, the registry needs to be checked to insure that the correct rdr.sys module is installed properly after the installation of SP6a.
The correct patch to have in order to initiate the fix is SP6a.

The default behavior has been changed to the behavior that existed before Windows NT 4.0 SP 4 for network activity. If this fix causes an issue, the registry can be modified manually to change the new default behavior.

Instructions for doing so are currently available at the Microsoft technical support website:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q249/7/99.ASP
Otherwise, please contact Microsoft regarding the instructions to modify the registry.
