GOAL:

What are the potential problem with operating system stability for users of Red Hat Linux 6.2 ?

FACT(s) (Environment):

RedHat Linux 6.2

FIX:

The following is a letter from Linux OS Development Director Erik Troan:

Dear Red Hat Linux User,

In lab testing, Red Hat, Intel and Dell have uncovered a potential rare problem with the Red Hat Linux 6.2 operating system that affects all x86 processor based systems. This affects all OEM client and server systems running this specific version of Red Hat Linux. We have worked with Intel and Dell to develop a fix. Again, this problem has been replicated only in the lab, and we have had no reports of this problem from customers.

ISSUE:
In rare instances, we've observed operating system stability issues with Red Hat Linux 6.2 systems. This has been reported only in testing when implemented in a heavy I/O workload environment, such as large database applications.

RISKS:
We have observed that in certain limited rare lab testing environments it has the potential to cause data corruption.

Red Hat has backed out the latest code optimizations from the kernel as a fix for this problem. This new kernel is available now for free download at http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/RHBA-2000013-01.html

AM I AT RISK?
Probably not, but the way to check to see if you are at risk is to check to see if you have a heavy load on your machine. To do this, please go to http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/RHBA-2000013-01.html
to read more about this issue and to find details on the solution mentioned above.

Again, this issue has been replicated only in lab environments under certain limited heavy I/O conditions. To date, we have had no reports of this condition from customers in field use. Red Hat has worked with Dell and Intel to quickly resolve the issue.

It is our experience that open source allows us to quickly identify the problem and work on solutions through the cooperation of all companies involved.

Regards,

Erik Troan
Director of OS Development
