Kbase 19689: Possible Cause of Version 9.1 Authentication Troubles
Autor   Progress Software Corporation - Progress

SUMMARY:
Changes to password verification code in the time between release of
The Beta version and First Commercial Shipment (FCS) of Progress
Version 9.1A may cause authentication problems.

SOLUTION:
The Progress AdminServer and Progress Explorer must be the same
version (either both Beta or both Release). The shared library used is
$DLC/lib/auth.dll. Because the library is shared, any difference
between the Beta and FCS will cause an immediate problem with password
authentication.

The Progress AdminServer does not need to run as root to validate
users on UNIX. However the username/password supplied in Progress
Explorer needs to be valid in the UNIX system the AdminServer is
running on.
