Kbase 19638: Progress Explorer Not Retaining Server Instances

SUMMARY:
Explorer in Progress Version 9.1A does not retain server
instances after exiting, then re-entering on Windows 2000. The
user is forced to add all the server instances manually.
The binary file proexp.msc shipped with Progress Version V9.1A
is created using Microsoft Management Console (MMC) version 1.1
which is not compatible with the MMC version 1.2 bundled with
Windows 2000.

To recreate the problem:
1) Run Progress Explorer from Start > Programs > Progress >
Progress Explorer Tool.

2) Right mouse click on Console Root and select Add Progress
Server.

3) Add a server (localhost is adequate for a test) and login.
Your localhost server appears on the Console Root list.

4) Exit Progress Explorer.

5) Invoke Progress Explorer as in Step 1. Your localhost
server is missing from the Console Root. It should be
listed.

SOLUTIONS:
A
Create a server instance list using Progress Explorer on a
WinNT 4.0 system. Copy the DLC/proexp.msc file from the WinNT 4.0 system to the DLC/proexp.msc file on the Windows 2000 system. Overwrite the existing file.

B
Leave Progress Explorer up and running after initial population
of the server instance list.

NOTE: Once the server(s) are entered back into the Explorer
Console Root, all Database, DataServer, Webspeed, etc.
entries are retained. Only the server instances are missing.

Workaround A presents a problem if you need to have server
instances frequently updated because you need to copy the
proexp.msc file to the Windows 2000 machine repeatedly.
