This Knowledge Base entry will help setting up a local test environment for the mail notification system on Actuate RS.
This setup was made for NT server!
Start by making sure the Microsoft mail and Microsoft Exchange Client is installed on the same NT system.
Also make sure you are logged in with the userid that runs the 3 Actuate Server processes.
Setup the postoffice:
Start "Microsoft Mail Postoffice" from the "Control Panel".
Make a new postoffice.
Make sure the new postoffice (\wpg000) is accessible for all users involved in the test.
Start the "Microsoft Mail Postoffice" again and add a user to the existing postoffice (other than the administrator for the postoffice).
Setup a user profile:
Start the "Mail" or "Mail and Fax" from the Control Panel.
Create a profile that uses Microsoft Mail only and give it a unique profile name (if profiles already exist).
Give the correct location of the postoffice.
Select a postoffice account name and give the appropriate password.
Chose deafult Personal Address Book and Personal Folders.
Do not add Outlook to the Startup Group.
Finish!
Go to the "Actuate Report Server directory"\bin and start mailinst.exe.
Chose the profile you want Report Server to use.
Start your Administrator Desktop and log in as Administrator (or a user with administrator rights) and change your mail notification to send mail with attachment.
You can now either test the setup by generating a report in the Report Server or by running the rsmail.exe in "Actuate Report Server directory"\bin.
If you test with rsmail.exe, use this syntax in the CMD window.
(First move to "Actuate Report Server directory"\bin directory)
rsmail -M<profile> -S<Subject> -P<path\textfile.txt> -LTRUE
Start Microsoft Exchange with the profile that was given in the test and check if you get mail. Note: If the Exchange is configured to check mail every 10 minutes, it might take a while.
If this works, you might want to try to run a report from the Report Server as well. Make sure you run the same profile from the user that is given the notification.
If this test works, it should now be possible to setup Microsoft Exchange Server in a profile and run this live in a network.
Happy Actuating!
