In order to download files from an ftp site or web site quickly (for example a patch), you can use a "Download Manager" tool. These tools are commonly used on the internet and improve the download time of files specially for large files.

Three features that most of these tools normally provide (among others) are the following:
- Resume downloads: A download can be resumed if it had failed or
paused. This requires a server that supports resume downloads.

- Multiple connections to the same site: The download manager creates multiple connections to the site to download different sections of a
file and then merge them. This also requires a server that supports
resume downloads.

- Switch to a mirror server: If the download manager finds other
servers for the file to be downloaded you can switch to another
server if it has better response time. Some tools switch
automatically to another server if the connection to the original
server was slow.

The downloading speed over a slow internet connection might not be improved much, however, if the download disconnects, the support of resume downloads will benefit the overall download time.

Some of the download managers are software supported by advertising, others are freeware and others can be bought.

Note: Some download managers may confuse a WebSpeed extension like .r, .w, .p and try to download it as a file. In this case, you may configure the download manager or disable it while using WebSpeed.

Where to find a download manager ?

- Search for download managers at www.cnet.com
- Search for download managers at www.winfiles.com

Two download managers that I have used:

- Go!zilla - www.gozilla.com
- Download Accelerator - www.downloadaccelerator.com
