GOAL:

Username Password Prompt with IIS 4.0 WebServer, Webtools

FACT(s) (Environment):

Windows NT 4.0
IIS 4

FIX:

Using the Microsoft IIS 4.0 Webserver on Windows NT with Webspeed, you might be prompted for a login ID and password when you try to use WebTools or access your website. If so, your login fails, even if you use the Administrator password.

This issue is the directory security built-into IIS 4.0.

To resolve the problem, follow these steps:

1. Go to: Start > Programs > WinNT 4.0 Option Pack > Microsoft Personal WebServer > Internet Service Manager.

This opens up the Microsoft Management Console.

2. Go to the web site in question (usually the Default Web Site).

3. Choose the WebSpeed folder.

4. Right click and choose Properties.

5. Choose the Directory Security Tab > Anonymous Control.

6. Click the Edit button.

7. Check the box labeled "Allow Anonymous Access".

8. Click Edit.

9. Enter a username that has been designated for guest access to the machine.

10. Create this user using the Windows NT User Manager.

11. Check the box labeled "Enable Automatic Password Synchronization".

12. Click OK.

13. Click OK again.

14. Click Apply and/or OK to close the Properties dialogue box.

Upon completion you will not be prompted for the login again.
