Installation problem: a previous version has been detected.
Progress version : 8.3B, 9.0B
Platform : Win 32 Intel
INTRODUCTIION
=============
During the installation the following error may occur:
"SEVERE : A previous installation of the same version has been detected, please uninstall current version before continuing.",
and the installation process aborts.
STEP BY STEP DETAILS
====================
The obvious reason for this error is that there has actually been a previous installation of this (or older) version of Progress on the machine.
Many times, such older version was incorrectly uninstalled from the machine, leaving bits and pieces behind. The installation process detects there are still some 'left-overs' from an older installation
and aborts.
SOLUTION
========
To see if a previous installation was done on the machine, simply check the registry :
(on Win95 - use regedit, on WinNT - regedt32.)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SOFTWARE - PROGRESS SOFTWARE CORPORATION
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SOFTWARE - PSC - PROGRESS
Will show you the versions of Progress that have been previously installed.
In the Control panel - Add/Remove Programs earlier version of Progress should appear, simply select the (older) version and remove.
If the (older) version does not show in the list of installed programs you have to manually delete the registry keys.
Also Progress files on the disk could indicate a previous install.
Look for a \DLC\ directory or see if there are any SETTINGS for DLC or PROMSGS.
Again manually removing all references might be the only option.
SOLUTION 2
==========
If the client is absolutely sure that there has been no previous installation of Progress on this machine, you may want to check if he uses an Administrator account with a roaming profile.
If the administrator installed Progess on another machine using this account, his registry settings are copied to the local machine when he logs in, even though Progress was not installed on the machine.
Simply creating an account with administrator rights but without a roaming profile will take care of this problem.
