KBase 19320 - Duplicated Software causing 1432 errors

Versions affected - Most likely all

I encountered an issue where a caller was experiencing 1432 errors when trying to run Progress client/server in a local loop back mode.

When using Procontrol OR Command Line instances of the Progress broker the caller could not start a client session. The problem was intermittant in nature and when present caused the Progress Client to issue a 1432 error - no server available for database.

When looking at the database with Promon there was a broker running, and the log also indicated that the broker was running normally.

SYMPTOMS:

When testing the suspect machine as a client to another server the suspect machine could connect properly and normal operation was apparent, indicating no problems.

When trying to connect to the suspect machine from a remote client the 1432 was encountered.

When trying to run a loop back session the 1432 was encountered.

The connections to the suspect machine from a client and from the suspect machine to a known good host as a client were accomplished with the same hosts and services files.

When performing the following telnet tests:

telnet HOST Service
telnet IP Service
telnet IP Port#
telnet HOST Port#

all tests appeared to connect properly.

Upon close examination of the Hosts and Services files all looked to be set up correctly - no typographical errors and sufficient space between TCP/IP port numbers, yet the client still issued the 1432 and the same identical -H -S -N parameters were used and correct in all instances.

Through discussion with the caller it was mentioned that the caller had a license to duplicate Progress software, and it was determined that the installation on the suspect hardware was from the duplicated media.

Upon having the caller re-install the entire Progress Suite from original Progress media the problem was no longer present and operations could be conducted normally.
