Which ODBC drivers are supported for Progress 9.x?
It is important to first understand that Progress RDBMS has two SQL interfaces: SQL-89 and SQL-92. These interfaces are substantially different and require different ODBC drivers.
MERANT ODBC Version 3.1:
The merged Intersolv and MicroFocus company ODBC Version 3.1 was purchased separately for Progress Versions 7.3 and 8.x. Version 3.1 connected via the Progress OIB/OID to interface with SQL-89. At that time, SQL-89 was the only SQL interface of the Progress RDBMS and provided ODBC access to a Progress database.
MERANT ODBC Version 3.1 (for SQL-89) was available as a separate product from both Progress and MERANT. Progress RDBMS Versions 7.3, 8.x, and 9.0 did not ship with this driver. MERANT later released Version 3.5. An upgrade to this driver may be covered under an existing maintenance agreement with MERANT. As third-party software, this is not covered under any Progress maintenance agreements.
Progress RDBMS Version 9.0A:
This version added a SQL-92 database engine. The SQL-92 database engine was SDK (Software Development Kit - not for deployment). Progress included a proprietary ODBC SQL-92 driver for access to the database, but not a SQL-89 ODBC driver.
Progress RDBMS Version 9.0B:
This version still had the SQL-92 engine as SDK-only. Progress replaced the proprietary ODBC driver with a MERANT ODBC Version 3.5 driver for SQL-92. The ODBC Version 3.5 (for SQL-92) drivers are the only MERANT drivers Progress has shipped with Progress Version 9.x RDBMS.
Progress RDBMS Version 9.1x:
This version is SQL-92 production-ready. Progress updated the proprietary ODBC driver with the MERANT ODBC Version 3.6 driver for SQL-92. The ODBC Version 3.6 (for SQL-92) drivers are the only MERANT drivers Progress has shipped with Version 9.1x RDBMS. Although the MERANT ODBC Version 3.5 driver for SQL-92 can also be used to make an ODBC connection to a Progress Version 9.1A RDBMS it was not shipped with that product.
The ODBC Version 3.5 / 3.6 / 3.7 (for SQL-89) configuration is still supported in Progress 9.1x. Use of the ODBC Version 3.1 with Progress Version 9.x is not supported. MERANT ODBC Version 3.5 / 3.6 / 3.7 drivers (for SQL-89) are the only supported ODBC driver (for SQL-89) for accessing Progress Version 9.x.
Progress RDBMS Version 9.1E:
DataDirect Drivers for OpenEdge SQL product will be upgraded from v3.6 to 4.1 in 9.1E.
Upgrades:
If you have a support contract with MERANT, you can get the ODBC Version 3.7 upgrades (for SQL-89) from MERANT (refer to Your MERANT support contract). MERANT Version 3.7 ODBC drivers for Progress are available by download (evaluation copy) from the MERANT site. This gives you access to a Progress Version 9.x database via OIB/OID.
