Status: Unverified
FACT(s) (Environment):
Progress 9.x
Webspeed 3.x
SYMPTOM(s):
Netscape browser prompting for the password to user 'unknown' when trying to access the WebSpeed workshop.
MS Internet Explorer does not prompt for the password
CAUSE:
This is because Windows NT Authentication is turned on for the WebSpeed virtual directory.
Progress started adding the virtual directory to IIS 4.0 at install time. While adding the virtual directory, Progress turns on NT Authentication. This requires a REMOTE_USER value that the NT domain recognizes to allow access to files on an NTFS file system. If Progress is installed on NTFS, and the virtual directory is created by the install process, the result is that your Netscape browser will not be allowed to access the workshop static html files. This is due to the fact that it does not pass the REMOTE_USER from the NT box like the Microsoft Internet Browser does.
FIX:
On NT 4.0 server, turn NT Authentication off in the IIS 4.0 MMC WebServer Administration utility.
On NT 4.0 Workstation, the Personal WebServer Administration tool does not allow you to modify this option. The work-around is to delete the virtual directory created by the install and re-add it manually.
