GOAL:

What is the meaning of SEMOPM?

GOAL:

What is the recommended setting for SEMOPM on Linux?

FACT(s) (Environment):

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.0
OpenEdge 10.x

FIX:

The SEMOPM kernel parameter is used to control the number of semaphore operations that can be performed per semop system call.
The semop system call (function) provides the ability to do operations for multiple semaphores with one semop system call

The default setting on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.6 (Tikanga) Linux wsipc-db-01.wise.wa-k12.net 2.6.18-238.9.1.el5 #1 SMP Fri Mar 18 12:42:39 EDT 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux is 32. Some recommendations from application vendors found on Google say to set it equal to SEMMSL but other articles say to set it to 100.

The SEMOPM setting is not especially relevant to Progress and does not exist on all systems. However, Progress does operations on only one semaphore at a time. So the default for SEMOPM on Linux of 32 should be fine. The recommendation is to leave the SEMOPM default setting.
