GOAL:

What alternatives are there to the Progress Explorer?

FACT(s) (Environment):

Windows

FIX:

There is nothing that will get your Progress Explorer working on Windows 7; Windows Server 2008 R2 32-bit; Windows Server 2008 R1 32-bit as documented in the README [ref: Note: OE00166210 Type: Limitation], where the recommended alternative is to use the *OpenEdge Explorer* (OEE) replacement for Progress Explorer.

The "Progress Explorer" is essentially a retired product (we're phasing it out). It is no longer installed with OpenEdge 10.2A 64-bit for example. The replacement is "OpenEdge Explorer" (OEE) which is an endemic part of the OpenEdge 10.2B+ installation onwards. It was first made available as /a separate install /as "OpenEdge Explorer 10.2A" which will run against either an OpenEdge 10.1C04 or
10.2A01 install. "OpenEdge Explorer 10.2A" is a free download through your ESD, if you have either the 10.1C or 10.2A the licenses under maintenance. The explicit SP needs to be applied before installing OpenEdge Explorer 10.2A. In later releases, OE 10.2B+ the OEE is bundled with the database license installations (ie: when you install, you have an option to install the OEE or not). From this release on (10.2B+) the OEE must exactly match the OE version used - ie: you can only use OEE 10.2B with OE 10.2B, while OEE 10.2A works with both 10.1C04 and 10.2A01+. The OEE installation needs to be installed to a different directory to your associated OpenEdge installation. Additionally, you cannot have OEE and OpenEdge Management (OEM) installed/running on the same machine. If you have OEM, then you can of course use this product instead to start/stop etc your databases (and much more functionality is available which are 'greyed out' when using the OEE product).

The major additional features of OpenEdge Explorer over the retired Progress Explorer are:
a. It's Browser Based
b. You can read logfiles

The alternatives to Progress Explorer in order of recommendation are:
1. Use the OpenEdge Explorer on Windows 2008 R2 instead of Progress Explorer,
Please refer to online Solutions for further information:
P142754, "Announcing the availability of OpenEdge Management 10.2A and OpenEdge Explorer 10.2A."
P151483, "How to get started with the OpenEdge Explorer?"
P161283, "Is there a demo of the OpenEdge Explorer Utility?"

2. Continue to use Progress Explorer on an_other machine which will still run Progress Explorer eg Windows XP, Windows 2003, or Windows Vista.
3. Use the *man command line utilities to manage resources eg (dbman, asbman, wtbman, nsman).

4. Start the database with a Local System account, instead of Progress Explorer example:

# teststart.bat
sc create OE_start_db binpath="<dlc\bin>\_mprosrv <path>\<dbname> -pf
<path>\<dbname>.pf" type= own
type= interact
sc start OE_start_db
sc delete OE_start_db
