SYMPTOM(s):
OpenEdge 10.2B 64-bit installation on Windows 2008 64-bit server prompts for an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package "vc_red.msi"
Enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package "vc_red.msi"
The path defaults to C:\<some random alpha numeric folder name>
Clicking browse on the above prompt takes it to a different folder on the D drive with another folder name with random alpha numeric letters where the vc_red.msi file is visible
Clicking cancel on the above prompt proceeds to the prompt for serial number and control code
Click on the setup.exe from the OE10.2B 64-bit installation files to install OE10.2B
The windows 64-bit server has visual C++ redistributable package (x86) already installed
FACT(s) (Environment):
Windows Server 2008
OpenEdge 10.2x
CAUSE:
The reason for the prompt for vc_red.msi is unknown at the time of writing. But there is a bug on the VS 2008 redistributable installation where it creates the temporary files on the C or root as per http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/316557/visual-studio-2008-c-redist-dlls-installs-temporary-files-into-c-root. The followng link describes the behavior of the vc_red.msi file:
http://www.prevx.com/filenames/1230627589073619780-X1/VC_RED.MSI.html
FIX:
Ignore the prompt by canceling the prompt for vc_red.msi which will proceed installation of OpenEdge 10.2x.
