GOAL:

I18N. Does Progress Support Arabic?

FACT(s) (Environment):

Progress 7.X
Progress 8.X
Progress 9.X

FIX:

The short answer is that Progress can be used with bi-directional languages (Arabic, Hebrew, etc...), on both character and GUI systems, but you will need to make some changes to your software to accommodate bi-directional languages. There are also some limitations on the GUI side. The Progress distributor in Saudi Arabia has software that they can provide to help with bi-directional support.

Some factors related to Arabic:

- Arabic uses single-byte character sets.

- There is not a special Input Method Editor (IME), although to input Arabic characters you will need to know about some additional keystrokes that set text alignment to the right or left, and to set the 'push-mode' to English vs. Arabic, and to set the keyboard to English vs. Arabic.

- There is no specific version of Progress for Arabic. Any version 7 and above character-based should be ok.

- Some customers have asked whether number handling is an issue. There are Arabic numbers (which are the left to right, 0-9 familiar to the West) and Hindi numbers (which use Arabic symbols for digits and go right to left).

- GUI versions of Progress also handle Arabic, but there are limitations on printing from GUI clients, and some further issues where a browser is involved.
