Step by step details:
NIS ( Network Information Services ) was before known as Yellow Pages,
the associated protocol was also known as the YP protocol.
NIS is a distributed system: it operates with several servers on
different computers in the network. One of the server is designated
'master server'; the slave server are always the last version by the
master server.
NIS map contain data records and index key.

When you work in a NIS scenario, make be sure that you pointing to the
true file. Example: /etc/service; use 'ypcat' command; otherwise, if
you uses a 'cat' command you can be addressed to a slave machine and
the service name that you search does not exist or exist with a
different port number.
