Installing Second CPU May Lead to Performance Problems

DRAFT COPY - Currently under review and edit.

If customers install a second CPU on NT server it is possible that
networking may be affected, leading to obvious performance problems
in Progress. A customer was running 8.2C Workgroup Database and
installed a second CPU which immediately resulted in poor performance
when doing a simple FOR EACH test from client PCs (share-lock FOR
EACH was 20 times slower with second CPU). It was also found that
NT performance monitor needed to be running to start the databases
from Procontrol and that performance monitor needed to be running to
improve database performance. If the second CPU was removed,
performance was immediately corrected.

It was eventually found that a simple ping from client to server was
randomly timing out. The network card was replaced (from generic to
3Com) and the performance problem was resolved.
