GOAL:

Why does task manager show my process consuming so much memory?

GOAL:

Why is the memory usage so different in task manager between the Working Set and Memory columns?

FACT(s) (Environment):

Progress/OpenEdge Product Family
Windows Vista
Windows Server 2008

FIX:

Memory in task manager on Windows 2008 and Vista is broken in to two types:

1. Working Set:
Includes Memory shared by other processes.

and

2. Memory
Private Working Set (Memory used by a process and is cannot be shared with other processes)

The working Set will always be more than the Private memory, and if you add all the Working Sets up together they may actually exceed the amount of Physical memory on the Machine, as this total includes memory that is shared with and by other process.
