Status: Unverified
SYMPTOM(s):
Intermittently database freezes
Excessive paging noticed during database freeze
Available physical memory of the VM is not the same as the value of the Memory Limit setting
FACT(s) (Environment):
Progress 9.1E
VMware Server
Windows Server 2003
Initially 512MB memory allocated to the VMWare VM. VMware will set a default memory limit of 512MB
Memory allocation was later increased to 2GB but the Memory Limit value remains the same (512MB)
CAUSE:
Although the VM?s operating system can "see" 2GB of memory it is actually only using 512MB of physical memory, the other 1.5GB of memory seen by Windows is actually a VMware swap file. This can cause excessive paging and performance problems.
FIX:
Adjust the Memory Limit setting of the VM to the availabe amount of (physical) memory (2GB in this case).
