GOAL:

Can an OpenEdge / Progress procedure be deployed to a machine without a Progress license?

GOAL:

Can a .r file be executed without a runtime license?

GOAL:

Does the ABL / 4GL compiler produce an executable file that can be run on any computer?

GOAL:

Is the OpenEdge / Progress client needed to run procedures that do not need database access?

FACT(s) (Environment):

All Supported Operating Systems
Progress/OpenEdge Product Family

FIX:

The OpenEdge / Progress client is necessary to run any ABL / 4GL procedure, even one that does not require database access. The client program (PRO, BPRO, MPRO, MBPRO, or PROWIN32) is the executable file; the ABL / 4GL procedures that make up the application may be thought of as input to the client program. The Client Networking product is intended for deployments that need to run OpenEdge applications, but do not need to develop or modify applications or run an OpenEdge database.
