SYMPTOM(s):
Performance of OpenEdge application has decreased since migrating to AIX 6.1 from AIX 5.3
Users have noted parts of their OpenEdge application take longer to run.
After rebooting the system there is no noticeable degradation in performance, however over time, they notice that parts of the application will run slower than usual.
Changing AIX disk I/O pacing back to the AIX 5.3 default of "off" does little to eliminate the performance degradation.
FACT(s) (Environment):
AIX Disk I/O pacing default behavior changed in between AIX 5.3 and 6.1. In 5.3, Disk I/O pacing is off by default. In 6.1, Disk I/O pacing is on by default.
The database, after image and before image files are all located on the same disk.
The disk where the database resides is configured for RAID 5.
minperm% is used to define the minimum amount of memory the kernel will set aside for non-computational pages, which are pages containing file data that are being read and written to disk.
IBM AIX 6.1
OpenEdge 10.1B03 Service Pack
CHANGE:
Operating system upgraded from AIX 5.3 to 6.1
CAUSE:
The default value for minperm% changed from 20% in AIX 5.3 to 3% in AIX 6.1.
FIX:
Use the AIX virtual memory manager command vmo, to change the minperm% number back to the 5.3 default of 20%:
vmo -p -o minperm%=20
